It's hard to tell what is going on at the moment, but Project Q Atlanta reports that employees of Southern Voice arrived to a note taped to the window of the office and the door locks had been changed. It's not clear at this time what has happened to flagship sister pub the Washington Blade.

The publishers of Southern Voice and David Atlanta magazine-along with a handful of other gay publications-abruptly closed its doors over the weekend, ending a months-long battle with a federal receivership that has imperiled the gay media company.

A three-sentence notice was posted to the front door of the Window Media office in Atlanta before employees arrived Monday morning. It was signed by Publisher Steve Myers and longtime Window executive Mike Kitchens.

The message greeting SoVo staff:
It is with GREAT regret that we must inform you that effective immediately, the operations of Window Media, LLC and Unite Media, LLC have closed down.

Please return to this office on WEDNESDAY, November 18th, 2009 at 11:00 AM to collect personal belongings and to receive information on your separation stipulations. Please bring boxes and/or containers that will allow you to collect all your personal belongings at one time.

Regretfully,

Steve Myers
Mike Kitchens

Creative Loafing noted that change was in the air when this trouble emerged earlier in the year:

In February, the NYC-based Gay City News reported that the Avalon Equity Fund, a parent company shareholder in SoVo, Washington Blade and several other gay publications' parent company Unite Media, had been forced into liquidation and faced federal receivership. People familiar with the matter recently told CL they were unaware of the company's fate.

Hi,

Is anyone in this lj community in Paris? I will be visiting in the spring to show some work at Palais de Tokio.
I am trying to get a sense of how life is for TG/TS there, so please reply here (or feel free to contact me via my lj) if you live there and would like to share some thoughts!

Thanks very much.

HEY LIVEJOURNAL. Remember when I wrote that huge rant about Transformers 2 and how insulting it was? This is like that, only instead of Transformers it is about the epic disaster flick 2012. I didn't walk out this time, but only because I knew Adam Lambert was going to sing over the credits. Yeah, I'll sit through shit for my lovelies, all right? It didn't even make me feel better, though, it just made me mad that Adam's gonna be associated with that clusterfuck.

Spoilery and filled with ire! )

We're having such dreary weather right now, dark and drizzly and foggy and generally abyssmal day after day after day. I HATE it!!! Autumn is usually the season I love most so having it be this awful feels like I'm being robbed of something precious.

I suspect most of you saw Terri's entry yesterday about Bob soap, right? But did you also see the fabulous blurbs she put together for the imaginary Gerard, Ray, Mikey, and Frank soaps? Totally awesome!!

Something for all you old popslashers in bandom: [info]bandomboybands. Claim a boyband song and write a fic based on it, sign ups are open until Dec 9th.

And now I'm going to continue contemplating my contribution to [info]mfac, have a not-too-terrible Monday everyone!

Good morning guys! My flist this morning is covered in pics of Jensen in a soft sweater and Jared Padalecki looking like he's about to bust out of all his shirts. I LIKE IT. Those boys! They make me so happy. *contented sigh*

I have to leave for work here in a few, but I was just thinking about yesterday. It was a challenging day. Super busy at the library and SIGH, I already got in trouble with my supervisor. WHOOPS. (And actually, the conversation gave me a light bulb moment about my own interpersonal skills, so it was worthwhile, I suppose.) BUT! As I was walking to the back, two different patrons stopped me to say thanks for my help earlier and it just really made me feel really validated.

Maybe that's an inappropriate thing to brag about, I don't know. But I do know that it made me feel amazing in a way that work never has in the past and y'all? That's a pretty cool thing.

If I ever get a day off again (and at this point, it doesn't look promising), I'm going to do a better post about what all I'm doing and what the library is like and all that. You can't wait, right? *grin*

Anyway, here's my mantra for today:

AND THEN! I'll probably post bunches about this between now and the actual start date on December 1, but IN THE MEANTIME, go check out [info]salt_burn_porn. It's basically like porn tag. One person tags another with a prompt and then they have 24 hours to write and post fic about it. There is better information at the comm, obviously! But it can be a lot of fun if people participate, so....go check it out! Think about it! Sign up! Feel inspired! Write me porn!

Ooohhhh, I have ten minutes left to oogle every part of Jared Padalecki. That's better than a shot of caffeine!

Happy Monday people!

It occurs to me that I have not talked much lately of the many, many books I have been reading. So I thought I could do some Brief Summaries in my own particular way, and thus perhaps both entertain and tell you all about books I have enjoyed!

I have been reading a lot of romance novels lately, as part of my quest to find books about relationships which I really really love. And I have been successful! In fact, I have found so many romance novels I love that should my career collapse in a teeny pile of dust, I have a romance novel I want to write and I have my new author name all picked out.

I fear I would be impeded in my new career by the fact I am woefully terrible at writing the Scenes of Sexy Times, but this does not alter the fact that while I was reading my way through innumerable books with much-corseted ladies and bare-chested gentlemen on them (my friends, who are used to borrowing my new books, are horrified and displeased, but I say unto them, there is a proverb about books, yea, and the judging of them by their covers), I noticed a trend. Eloisa James and Sherry Thomas (Sherry Thomas can write like cream pouring from a jug into a glorious sunrise! By which I mean her prose is really - smooth and also very shiny and - look, I didn't say I could write like a glorious cream sunrise) were the first examples I noticed.

I call it New Wave Historical Romance. By which I mean that some of the more recent historical romances I've picked up have a tendency to feature some really lovely writing, and excellent side characters, but most importantly really awesome heroines.

I truly hate the Blank Page Heroine. She is in a lot of books - I don't mean to pick on romance, because sadly I have seen her in every genre, including my own - and sometimes she seems to be there as a match for the hero who won't bother him with things like 'hobbies' and 'opinions.' Sometimes she is carefully featureless (still missing those pesky hobbies and opinions) so that, apparently, the reader can identify with her and slot their own personalities onto a blank page. As I don't identify with blank pages, I find the whole business disturbing. But I have found that given an awesome heroine, romances can really work for me.

As for example!

Bound by your Touch by Meredith Duran

BLUESTOCKING: And now to give a speech to the archaeological society. What a fine day this is, to be sure! Finally some appreciation for the scholarly lady.
RAKE: Daddy, I have your artefact! Look, look, I came all this way to rub it in your face-
BLUESTOCKING: Hem hem.
RAKE: -lots of people here, wonder what that's about, anyway, the important thing is that I HATE MY DADDY and-
BLUESTOCKING: Please sit your rake ass and your daddy issues THE HELL DOWN.
RAKE: ... Wut?
BLUESTOCKING: Also your artefact is an obvious fake.

RAKE: Dude, dude, fellow rakes in my club, has it ever occurred to you that older ladies who know a ton are really really super hot?
FELLOW RAKES: Um. No.
RAKE: Well, I gotta go read up on archaeology. No, no time for brandy today!
FELLOW RAKES: ... Is he feeling okay?

Written on your Skin by Meredith Duran

SPY: Blugh - blugh - I believe I was poisoned - Oh God, and here's this fluffy little airhead come to bother me again.
MINA: Hi! I saw you got drugged so you would die so I re-drugged you a ton! LOL! Quickly, better escape out the window, I calculate you only have about twenty minutes of lucidity left in you!

SPY TURNED NOBLEMAN: After I became a nobleman I very quickly stopped being a spy, because it is no fun at all. Also, I have PTSD. Now to fulfill my last debt and help this occasionally-surprising bimbo find her mamma.
MINA: LOL, this adventure reminds me of the time I blackmailed a monk!
NOBLESPY: Wut?
MINA: LOL never mind! I am so blond and pretty! Flutter flutter eyelashes and hair-
NOBLESPY: Oh right.
MINA: Fluttery eyelashes and hair served me well when coaxing the businessmen of America to fund my extremely profitable perfume business.
NOBLESPY: Say what?
MINA: I mean, LOL!
NOBLESPY: Seriously, are you fluttering your hair and wearing scandalous dresses to hide the fact you are an evil genius?
MINA: LOL! ... Maybe.

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare

LUCY: Hello Jeremy here I am at your door!
JEREMY: What are you doing here, Lucy?
LUCY: BRINGING THE MACK!
JEREMY: As a gentleman in times of yore at a respectable household inhabited only my best friend and his little sister, I was not expecting the mack.
LUCY: Okay, did the mack work? Because I'm practising for another dude, so any tips are welcome, over here.
JEREMY: Lucy please! I may swoon.
LUCY: Oooooh, so the mack worked really well?

LUCY: Okay, so I am super dolled up in order to defeat my blonde, beautiful, probably dumb shallow and mean rival!
EVERYONE: Lucy, evening attire is not appropriate for the breakfast table. We can see your bosom. Also you are eating like a horse.
LUCY: Gotta have fuel for the smackdown with my hated rival! Pass the kippers.
BEAUTIFUL BLONDE RIVAL: Shall we get drunk and gossip about boys?
LUCY: Oh crap.

JEREMY: You know Lucy many people consider me a dark, dangerous and mysterious rake... I'm just saying is all.
LUCY: Ahahahaha, I have known you since I was ten! You are so soft-hearted you miss shooting partridges on purpose! Ahahahaha, A RAKE.
JEREMY: IT'S BEEN SAID.
LUCY: Ahahaha. You're going to have to give me a minute here.

Of course I have not just been reading romance novels. I've also been reading things like Black British Culture & Society, an excellent book but hard to summarise amusingly, and my true love YA fantasy. Which also has several examples of awesome heroines!

AI LING: My father seems to have disappeared. Well, time to go questing for him through the Asian-inspired fantasy landscape.
CHEN YONG: Are you sure that's wise?
AI LING: You are right! I should also bring a packed lunch.
CHEN YONG: My attractive brother and I will accompany you on your quest. Please, do feel free to avert your eyes from the unseemly spectacle of us practising our combat skills. Shirtless.
AI LING: Oh, that's fine. You didn't happen to bring any sort of snacks to nibble on while I watch?
CHEN YONG: While you watch what?
AI LING: Uh - nature? I'm very keen on... sketching. Yeah, that's it. Sketching.
CHEN YONG: You must be overcome with maidenly horror at the monster made from a mass of decomposing corpses we just faced!
AI LING: Aren't Chinese monsters the absolute best? Take that, European mythology!
CHEN YONG: Huh?
AI LING: Yes, I think I am in shock. I hear noodles are good for that? Mmm. Noodles.

Give Up the Ghost by Megan Crewe

CASS: Since my sister died and my best friend betrayed me, I've decided to embrace cynicism as a way of life. And never talk to anyone alive ever again.
SCHOOL: What, nobody?
CASS: Since I can talk to ghosts, this actually puts less of a crimp in my social life than you might think.
GHOSTS: By the way, we know lots of scandalous secrets about the people in your school!
CASS: Ah excellent. My reign of terror begins. Man, I hate people. Especially my best friend, and her idiot boyfriend, and their idiot friend Tim who puts on all those dramatic airs about the tragic loss of his mother. We all have tragic losses, buddy.
TIM: I really am sad though...
CASS: That's no excuse to be so emo.
TIM: Will you talk to my mom for me?
CASS: You have to promise to man up if I do.
TIM: Okay!
CASS: Huh. Contact with living people is actually warming my cold heart. Just a little bit. Well, Tim will hate me once I tear down his friends anyway.
TIM: You're awesome. Your powers are awesome and your attitude inspires me and um your hair is also very shiny.
CASS: I could wish Tim liked me for more than my paranormal abilities.
TIM: ... Would you go to prom with me?
CASS: No chance of that, though!
GHOSTS: Um, Cass. You may be taking that cynicism thing a bit far.

So those are some books I have enjoyed in the last six months - are there any books you guys would like to nominate to get the Sarah Treatment, or is that a fate too terrible to comtemplate? And what are your thoughts on heroines, Blank Page Heroines or otherwise?

Mondays, every week, let's celebrate ourselves, to start the week right. Tell me what you're proud of. Tell me what you accomplished last week, something -- at least one thing -- that you can turn around and point at and say: I did this. Me. It was tough, but I did it, and I did it well, and I am proud of it, and it makes me feel good to see what I accomplished. Could be anything -- something you made, something you did, something you got through. Just take a minute and celebrate yourself. Either here, or in your journal, but somewhere.

(And if you feel uncomfortable doing this in public, I've set this entry to screen any anonymous comments, so if you want privacy, comment anonymously and I won't unscreen it unless you tell me it's okay. Also: yes, by all means, cheer each other on when you see something you want to give props to!)

At the end of the last Fall Out Boy tour Stump stopped by Daryl Hall's online show Live From Daryl's House where he performed with Hall (of the world famous Hall and Oates). Stump played Fall Out Boy songs (a couple from behind the drum kit), a couple songs from the Hall and Oates catalogue, and a cover of the Jimmy Ruffin classic "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted." eta: 0. Because this is actually the most important thing: I would really, really like my BND package to arrive tomorrow or even on release day. That would be stupendous. Avoiding the spoilers is already killing me. Shipping gods, hear my plea. (ALSO, Patrick Stump, you're ridiculous[ly lovely and awesome]. I feel your nickname-correcting pain so, so deeply.)

    1. I just completed my random, month-long review of Sports Night. Seriously, guys. Seriously. I miss that show so much (I miss Dan, a lot, and also Casey a little bit, and Dana! And Jeremy and Natalie's Jeremy/Natalieness. And I don't like to think about how much I miss Robert Guillaume in general, so), and I didn't even watch it when it was on TV. Why don't they make 'em like that anymore?

    2. I signed up to get an AO3 beta account. I want to state for the record that I find the OTW's name to be pretentious and annoying, but I'm interested in seeing and being part of a resurgence of archive-based fandom.

Also, while characterizing transformative works-based fandom as a "predominantly female culture" is technically true, I don't like it. That's a personal thing, and I doubt it (the descriptor or my feelings about it) will change. I don't necessarily think the phrase needs to change (see above re: technically true), but I do think it's important for trans and non-female fans to speak their presence when the phrase and its less-kind kin get thrown around.

    3. I'm going to buy a corkboard tomorrow. Because I need it for planning stories (I have a three-page skeleton outline for the LTROI AU, oh my god) and my life. Being/getting organized scares me, because it presents huge potential for failure, and also huge potential for success. Nonetheless, important. I think I need a new hammer, too.

    4. "Breaking, Standing" - ¡Forward, Russia! (Because other bands don't have enough punctuation in their names.) "When it weighs too much, think of it as seven times the weight! But when it costs too much, consider it, but don't come to me for aid."

I took a planetary geology class in college, and on the first day of class the professor asked who in the class would like to go to Mars given the chance. Lots of people raised their hands. Then he asked who would like to go to Mars even if we knew there was no chance of coming back. I was the only person in the classroom who kept my hand up.

That's how I feel about Mars. I just thought I would share.

I don't know why the combination tickles me so pink, but it does. Lordy lordy, Gaga. I'm glad I don't scrobble my ipod, otherwise that count would be even worse.

Fame Monster leaked tonight. I have a feeling that count is going to soar into triple digits tonight. Raise your hand if you wish you had nominated her/Bad Romance for yuletide? LOVE YOU GAGA!

Jack's Mannequin - Dear Jack EP (This I stole from [info]allthespoons but it's worth linking you guys just for the remix of Swim.
    Weezer - Radittude

And this is old, but I uploaded it for [info]riadsala ages ago. If you don't already own a copy of the fame, you should. Also, the cherry tree sessions which [info]strobelighted pointed out to me today. Yay music!!

Some trufax: I started to read the liner notes for BND: GH, and closed out. I don't care, I know they say they're coming back but I literally cannot handle the worry. I just love my band :( [info]giddygeek linked me to this post that has a gif we apparently missed out on hard core. That is the way I love you Fall Out Boy, you affectionate gaywads.

Heart and bone damage from low vitamin D tied to declines in sex hormones

Researchers at Johns Hopkins are reporting what is believed to be the first conclusive evidence in men that the long-term ill effects of vitamin D deficiency are amplified by lower levels of the key sex hormone estrogen, but not testosterone.

In a national study in 1010 men, to be presented Nov. 15 at the American Heart Association's (AHA) annual Scientific Sessions in Orlando, researchers say the new findings build on previous studies showing that deficiencies in vitamin D and low levels of estrogen, found naturally in differing amounts in men and women, were independent risk factors for hardened and narrowed arteries and weakened bones. Vitamin D is an essential part to keeping the body healthy, and can be obtained from fortified foods, such as milk and cereals, and by exposure to sunlight.

I don't know how or if this would translate to us. But it's valuable to note that estrogen is an important hormone for the health of cismen, and presumably us too. This study also makes note of the confusing results of hormone treatment of post-menopausal women. Such treatment didn't show lowered heart disease risk, but greater heart disease risk. This means that exogenous (not body produced) estrogen introduced to ciswomen didn't have the benefit attributed to endogenous estrogen.

If you couldn't be there, this is the next best thing. Armed with my trusty video cam (and help from the Equality NC folks to get a place to set up the cam at the last minute), I recorded the main program of the Equality NC Gala. Video One: Opening remarks...

Video Two: ENC's Executive Director Ian Palmquist receives a surprise honor for his 10 years of service with the organization (around 12:45). He later presents State Senator Julia Boseman the legislative award for her leadership in getting the School Violence Prevention Act passed and signed into law. Not only that, she has represented the LGBT community in more ways than can be counted as our only out member of our General Assembly. There was a lot of laughter when Ian referred to that, since there are many closets yet to be kicked open in our legislature. (18:50).

He also noted that when the legislature was voting for a resolution honoring the late, vile, racist and homophobic former senator Jesse Helms, Julia was the ONLY lawmaker who voted No. When asked why she voted no), Boseman said the only reason that she voted no was because there was no "HELL NO." Everyone roared (at 15:55). Her acceptance speech starts at 22:25.

North Carolina State Senator Julia Boseman: Thank you. It has been quite a road. I have to tell you that ten years ago, when I decided to run...or people asked me to run, I was most concerned about how people would judge me, about how they would judge my sexual orientation. I had a friend coming to me over and over saying "Julia, you have to run, you have to run," and or "you're crazy, you're an open lesbian; I'll be eaten alive, you know. [unintelligible, laughter] But it's been a very amazing, trying, worrying journey to get here, and it's truly a gift to be here.

When I won this seat it didn't become my seat, it became our seat, and we've been able to accomplish a lot with our seat. And as Ian said, having a seat at the table has made a world of difference.

When I'm in that back room of the caucus and we're talking about the marriage amendment, it makes a difference that we're there. When we're talking about the bullying bill, it made a difference that we're there. When we have Republicans saying that comprehensive health education, sexual education means that you're going to teach all our kids how to be gay, it makes a big difference that we have a seat at the table.

The rest of her speech is below the fold.

Everyone wants to talk about the Gay Agenda and what we want, I think they finally realized now in Raleigh is that we want what other people want. With our seat we've passed some amazing things, including the bullying bill.  We passed Jessica's Law. It's a 25-year mandatory minimum sentence for child molesters --and when they do get out they have electronic monitoring for the rest of their lives. We have the School of Nursing, we have film incentives. Our oyster population has decreased 9% since the beginning of the century; we have legislation that will help our environment with an oyster hatchery. These are things that are important to us are what's important to everyone.

I'm proud to have my name on this bullying bill, but it has been such an effort of all of us -- and Ian, oh my gosh -- after we passed it, I was like "What am I going to do? I'm not going to see you around every corner when I turn around?" Because every waking moment in the legislature we spent fighting for this bill. Ian has been tenacious, he has been incredible for Equality (NC). Everyone who supports Equality...Ian, I cannot sing your praises enough -- you're the best. We couldn't have done it without you.

Because of this, this is the first time in our general statute that we actually have sexual orientation and gender identity here in North Carolina. And you know when I was first elected ten years ago to the County Commission, that's when Jesse Helms was in office.

[Someone says "Boooo", Julia says "Yeah...hell, no"]

I won't always have this seat; and it's time for other people to step up. I'm asking you and your friends to please get involved, run for office, be on boards and commissions; it makes such a difference us being there.

You know, there's a senator who's a good friend of mine, who when I was first elected was talking to another good friend of mine at an event and he was like "Hey, how about that gal from Wilmington, she won!" [And the other friend] was like "Yeah." And then he said "I met her; she's actually really nice." And of course she was kind of caught off guard and walked away, but it makes a difference.

This same senator came up to me and he's introduced legislation to try and stop discrimination in state agencies, and he'll come up to me and say "Julia -- I've got something for you to read!" and I'm like, "Yes, senator?" He says "This professor up North he's doing this research -- and it's genetic -- you can't help it!" I'm like "Thank you, senator, that's good to know..."

    [Laughter erupts in the room.]

It really has made a huge difference, and it has been quite an honor tonight be here tonight to receive this award. This really has been such a group effort to get this bullying bill to go through and we have more to do...[unintelligible]

Thank you very much; before I sit down I want to thank two incredible women in my life -- my partner Crystal -- we're expecting a child in January. You've been with me through elections, through the mud-slinging, through things...you guys would not even believe we've gone through. Thank you for sticking with me. And I want to thank my mother for being here. Thank you for teaching me not to back down, to stand up for what I believe in, to give back to the community and to always do things right. Thank you for this award;  it was my pleasure being here with you tonight.

Afterwards, I headed over to Sen. Boseman to introduce myself as I've not had the opportunity to meet her before.  When I introduced myself I felt like a numnut when she burst out "I know who you are!" I guess I just figured she's so busy working in the state Senate that she'd have no clue who I was. I guess I'm not incognito in NC anymore.

Anyway, Q-Notes Editor Matt Hill Comer took the photos below (click here for his coverage of the gala). The first one was blurry; it's because we all broke up when Julia planted one of those surprise kisses on the cheek for the camera, but Matt missed the shot. I kept it anyway since it's kind of interesting.

The gala raised over $25K for Equality NC; it's one of the few state organization that has grown each year. Over 280 attended (I don't have the official count), with tables added that night as late-comers dropped in. And, btw, Kate and I filled our table so we didn't dine alone. :)

Edit: Found! There's a link in comments, if anyone else is looking for it.

This actually needs to be its own 'verse. So consider this the first part and I may come back to write more later?

    Title: International Werewolf Relations
    Fandom: Harry Potter/The Dresden Files
    Characters/Pairings: Harry/Draco, Billy/Georgia, Teddy Lupin
    Rating: suitable for Everyone
    Word Count: 1427 words
Disclaimer: I own nothing of either the Wizarding world of JKR or the supernatural world of Jim Butcher. Written in fun.
Summary: Harry and Draco take Teddy to Chicago the summer before he starts Hogwarts.

Draco detests Muggle transportation, but Trans-oceanic Apparition is complicated, dangerous, and draining. )

I was just curious to see what reason codes/ how have people been able to get their hystos covered by insurance? Whether it be before, during or after medical Transition (ie. T and/or Top surgery)?
Also were you limited to only a "certain" type of hysto? (ie. abdominal, just cervix and uterus removed, everything remove and so on).

I feel more people would benefit from such a discussion. Plus I am just curious for my own nerdy purposes because this is not as commonly discussed and I wanted to see if there was any pattern/ common reason.

    Thanks in Advance

Apparently this wants to be fic, but I don't know where it goes. It may be part of the werewolf!Empires 'verse, but it may be something else entirely: Nick waited until he heard the shower start up before he picked up his phone. Tom answered on the third ring, sounding a bit distracted. “Come get your boy off my couch.” Nick was serious. He loved Ryan, really, but it was far past time for Ryan and Tom to kiss and make up.

Oh look, drabbles! Or, more appropriately, snapshots! I don't think any of them are an even number of words, much less exactly 100.

125 words; Dean, Sam, military; for [info]reallythateasy.

    You can't be serious! )

    100 words; Draco/Harry/Luna, zipper; for [info]reallythateasy.

There were times Harry was baffled by Luna’s love of Muggle attire. )

448 words; Brian/Greta in the Basement Romantic AU 'Verse

Brian heard Greta before he saw her, and he still hoped he was wrong. )

636 words; CM/bandom crossover; Spencer Reid meets Spencer Smith.

Reid has to visit four stores before he finds the particular book of Celtic folk tales he’s been looking for. )

I was just wondering if anyone had personal experience having a hysto with a gynecolosist by the name of Dr. Zoe Rodriquez in NYC. She is affiliated with Beth Israel Hospital.

    Thanks in Advance

It's quite possible that I posted this one before, but I can't find it anywhere, so I may just be thinking that I've shared it quite a bit via email? Either way.
