“Brendon,” Ryan says, and his voice is low and quiet and curls up Brendon’s spine like a drunken serpent. Ryan’s fingers are long and thin. He taps a beat on the desk as he speaks.
“Yes?” Brendon asks.
“I think you’re magical,” Ryan says, “and I wanted to know – how would you feel about doing hair for a rock band?”

Looks Okay On You by
One of the kids at the party, a friend of a friend, makes him something sweet with rum. His best girl friend rubs sugar on the rim of the glass and keeps an eye on him all night, even though all he does is talk a little louder and lean on people a little more heavily. No one minds holding him up, though, and he repays their kindness by telling him how much he likes them and how nice he thinks they all are.
He feels pretty stupid the next morning, but at least he didn't get violent.
And finally, La Guera by Cherrie Moraga, which is a feminist theory essay that I have to read for class this week. It is about the experience of being biracial and lesbian and growing up in America, but also, more generally, about intersections of oppressions. You should read it because a) it's fascinating and well written, and b) it's short enough that if you don't appreciate it, you really haven't wasted any time.

Stupid high school au where hardly anyone's gay: Mikey, Pete and Alicia by
"Wanna buy some movies?" he said in the most Mafia-ish voice Frank had been able to teach him.
"Mikey Way!" the guy said, turning around so quickly he almost fell over. He saved himself by looping his arms around Mikey's waist, leaning in.
Mikey blinked. "Was I drunk when I met you, or something?"
"You've never met me," the guy said cheerfully. "What kind of movies?"
Oh. He was hot, Mikey thought, and apparently either ballsy or stupid, to be hanging all over Mikey in the middle of school like that. It was nice.
All Their Personal Belongings Have Intertwined by
Frank/Jamia, Jamia/Lyn-Z, Frank/Gerard, Gerard/Lyn-Z; Really great Jamia/Lyn-Z interaction, among other things.
Jamia gets up and feels a little, dunno, different, and she's late, and she doesn't worry about it too much, and then she gets up the next day and feels the same thing and takes a pregnancy test, and it's positive, and she starts jumping up and down in the bathroom and making this really embarrassing high-pitched oooooooo-ing sound, because she's going to have a fucking baby, and, even more amazing, she really wants to have a fucking baby, and when stuff like that lines up sometimes you can't control the noises you make.

Kiss My Ass I Bought a Boat I'm Going Out to Sea by
Jon/Spencer, Ryan/Brendon
Spencer can’t stop smiling and Jon can’t stop smiling back at him and neither thing makes any sense at all. They have no reason to be this happy, none at all. Jon would say that the writing isn’t going well, but that would imply that there is actual writing going on and that is not the case.
And yet, here they are. Smiling.
And not just Jon and Spencer, Ryan and Brendon too. Maybe not at each other in particular, but at everything else.
They’re passing the time and it feels like vacation, but there’s this thing in the background, this we need to get our shit together thing. But they’re smiling enough that the thing starts to feel temporary. It’ll come when it comes.

Patd gsf-ish; the one where Jon Walker is really a unicorn. Fabulous tension. Lovely.
“I’m a unicorn.”

Yeah, ok. *hands* I don't even know what I'm doing right now.
Anyway, I wanted to read kidfic but there was none! Or, at least, nothing new. So, whatever, I went looking for my favourite (bandom) kidfic and have conveniently gathered them here for you (er... and for me). \o/

Sleeping/Dreaming Patterns by
AU, Brendon/Ryan
Panic never formed; Brendon is a solo musician who just returned from europe, and Ryan is a writer who likes fresh vegetables.
Spencer talked about Ryan a lot, anyway; new things he was doing, the funny thing he said last week, how he locked himself out of his apartment and instead of coming around to Spencer’s and getting the spare key like a normal person he sat on his front stoop for two and a half hours because he got an idea for a story and had to write it out right there and he ended up getting some mild form of frostbite. Spencer was frequently exasperated with Ryan but in a way that made Brendon grin, because it was clear all through it how much Spencer loved Ryan.
And Brendon liked it when people love other people. He wrote a whole song about it, and everything.
Oh! One other thing: I have iPod formatted versions of the Brent Wilson unofficial documentary thing that I can upload if anyone is interested, just let me know in the comments!
The Man With the Sunflowers by
PaTD, Brendon/Ryan, Spencer, Keltie. AU
This story is surreal without being unintelligible. Fascinating. Author's summary: Ryan's normal but the rest of the world isn't. He meets a guy called Brendon who's entirely too content with a life of plants for Ryan's liking. A tale about not everything needing a reason.
Over and over, scribbled on to the page of the well-kept notebook, are hundreds of different sized sunflowers.

The Great American Novel by Arsenicjade(
Frank/Gerard, Frank/Mikey, , Mikey/Pete, Brendon/Ryan, Spencer/Bob, Jon/Pete, Gerard/JC (chasez)
This 'novel' is made up of five interconnected novella and novel length stories (between 20,000 and 50,000 words, apx.), each of which can be read on it's own, but which are more fun read as a whole. It's pretty fucking epic. I'll admit that what sold me on this story (at least to start) was the Gerard/JC pairing, but Arsenicjade has always been one of my favourite popslash authors, so I was also really excited to see that she was writing bandslash.
Youngest member or not, when he joins the band, Frank is old enough to know he's getting himself into trouble. It's good trouble, so far as he can tell, but trouble all the same, because all either Way brother has to do to get him to pay attention is to breathe, and generally Frank is harder to impress than that. He is actually, for the most part, not terribly interested in people. People are largely stupid.
Tragically for Frank, neither Mikey nor Gerard is. Even more tragically, Gerard has eyes that make Frank want to write lyrics, which isn't really his thing.
Mikey has hipbones and hands and cheekbones and a jaw line, but Frank pretends he doesn't, because there is trouble and then there is trouble, and the Ways are the latter, pure and simple.

Bob/Frank
"We have to switch bunks," Ray says, and Bob peers over the top of Us Weekly (Mikey's) at him.
"I'm serious. Apparently it is —" Ray takes a deep breath, as if what he's about to say is either very long or patently ridiculous, and Bob immediately knows this is Frank's fault. "Apparently it is a danger to your well-being for you to be on the top bunk. So we need to switch."

Bend Over Boyfriend by

Het, pegging
She's actually looking for Pirates of the Caribbean when she finds the other DVD. The boys are out doing something, she didn't even ask, and she's too tired to go out and be sociable. She just wantsJohnny Depp and microwave popcorn, but she can't find the damn movie. She thinks she has, when she feels the edge of a DVD box in the back, behind a messy pile of other movies. It takes some careful handling to get it out without toppling the whole stack over, but she manages. It's not Pirates of the Caribbean, though. It's Bend Over Boyfriend 2.
Of course she watches it.
Fall Out of What I Fell In by Rhiannon (
Frank/Gerard, Gerard/Mikey, Gerard/Frank/Mikey
Gerard focuses the vast majority of his stage play on Frank, but sometimes he ends up next to Mikey-- usually when Mikey's been blending too far into the background and Gerard wants to draw him out. He'll go down on his knees in front of his little brother, or pretend to bite his neck, or lick him.
And maybe it shouldn't be, but it's the hottest thing Frank's ever seen.
Give Me More by
Ryan/Brendon
"So it's all about this, like, transsexual, you know, and she's --"
They're on the lawn outside Spencer's grandmother's house, waiting because she's making Spencer try on a suit for a wedding, and Ryan looks up from the grass he's tearing into long narrow strips.
"You should just read it," Ryan says. "I think you -- of anyone you would like it. Really it's about what happens when people hate themselves. When you let the world make you believe you should hate yourself."
Brendon sits up. "I don't hate myself."
Ryan ties two splinters of grass in a knot, his long fingers looping around and his lips pulled tight.
where we went wrong by
Ryan/Spencer
to tell the truth spencer would rather be inside, would rather be watching TV or maybe trying out that new game his dad got him for his birthday that he hasn’t had the chance to play yet, but there’s this unfortunate thing, right, where when ryan stands on his doorstep and twists his t-shirt in his fingers and says hey, you wanna— well, spencer doesn’t really know how to say no.
Et Tu by
Pete/Patrick
Because the thing is, Pete doesn't write the songs. He writes fragments, and then Patrick looks at those fragments and puts them together and suddenly they mean something, and that's what Patrick means to Pete. That's what Patrick is.
Sometimes Pete gives him scraps of paper--shit scribbled on the back of receipts, decorating the edge of the kids' menu coloring paper he always requests at TGI Friday's--and Patrick always blinks down at it, lips pursed, before saying something like, "You know, you could just stop calling her."
Light by
Mikey-centric, Frank/Gerard
Synchronik is another of those from popslash fandom that is now writing bandslash, which I pretty much love A LOT. This story, though, makes my heart ache to read. And it always makes me cry.
Mikey had always known that life wasn't fair, but that knowledge was never so painful as it was when he watched his brother kiss his best friend on the mouth.

"Britpop--"
"Thank fuck we missed out on Vanilla Ice--"
They both crack up at the same time, and Pete's laugh is loud and braying. Mikey's got this really stupid thing where he snorts and the rest of his laughter sounds like he's about to choke--just him giggling is enough to drive Frank to fucking fits of hilarity--but it's kind of drowned out by the donkey bray, so that part is pretty rad.
"Man, man," Pete gasps, "being retro is such a fucking hassle, but at least we have, you know, options. We can take the pretty and leave the scuzz. It wasn't all Kurt Cobain genius back then."

it's not like bob woke up one morning with wings. bob wakes up every morning with wings, and sometimes there are feathers in his mouth and sometimes he's so warm he can barely breathe. he tries not to think anything of it, really, except they tend to get in the way and bob's easily annoyed by things he can't change.
it doesn't occur to him that the guys in my chem don't know until gerard catches him with his sweatshirt off. his t-shirt is thin and white, and his wings are a faint outline underneath it, soft gray and just peeking out under the hem. bob says hello, and that's when gerard steps closer, squints.

Pete Wentz is just something that happens to people. Like a tornado or a lightning strike, he's sudden and nearly impossible to avoid. Maybe he's more like puberty, something weird and awkward that everyone goes through. Patrick's not sure which he'd rather believe -- natural disaster or just a phase.
It takes Patrick a while to realize this, since it takes Patrick a while to learn that Pete Wentz actually exists

Miss Cleo Was An Ametuer by
Frank/Mikey, psychic!Gerard
Frank is the first to figure it out, because Frank is a genius.
Or at least, that's how Frank always starts the story. Gerard starts it with "so one day Frank did something fucking moronic", which is more or less the truth.
Because what Frank does is this: during the show, he decides to up the ante a little. You know, make 'em scream a little louder. So he grabs his guitar, swings it above his head...and hits Gerard.

AU
This is a girl!gerard story, but its not genderswap or always-been-a-girl, rather, Gerard(Gwen) is non-op m-to-f transgender. And it isn't at all cracky or shticky, its just really, really good. This story is realistic; it doesn't ignore the realities of the situation, or skip the odd and uncomfortable bits.
"I'm- a friend of Mikey's." Frank finds his smile somewhere, crooked and a little stunned, and he holds his hand out to Gee. "I don't think I've met you. I mean. I know I haven't met you." Mikey, she's beautiful. Why the fuzzy heck haven't you told me about her?
Gee only hesitates a moment before taking Frank's hand and giving it a cute little shake, carefully soft, her manicured nails short and maybe the slightest bit smudgy with ink. Her smile's quirky and crooked as she looks down, at their hands, and then back up at Frank, through the long sweep of her lashes. "I'm Gwen, Mikey's cruel taskmistress and sometime conveyance. It's nice to meet you, Frank."
